Domestic Violence.

  • Every 9 seconds a woman is beaten in the United States.

  • About 1 in 4 women are likely to be abused by a partner in her lifetime.

  • 20% of 54 undocumented Filipino women living in the Bay area reported having experienced some form of domestic violence.

There are to date, 2 documented FIlipino women who fell victim to domestic violence-related homicides in San Francisco. Whether documented or not, there is evidence that domestic violence has come to be a real problem in our community.

babae believes that one of the critical steps in eliminating domestic violence is to bring awareness of its prevalence in our community. We need to begin dialoging around the issue in order to shift attitudes that permit domestic violence to occur, and empower Filipinos to take action against this issue.

To further assess the San Francisco Filipino Community's view on domestic violence, babae disseminated a survey and found that many participants listed they have experienced domestic violence first-hand, or know of someone who is a survivor of domestic violence. Survey findings also indicated a lack of culturally relevant and culturally sensitive resources available to Filiipino women.

The most publicized pinay domestic violence homicide was the murder of Claire Joyce Tempongko, a woman who was stabbed to death by an abusive boyfriend in October 2000. In Tempongko's case, the Filipino Advisory Council, along with other Filipino and domestic violence organizations, held the criminal justice system, the Probation Department, and the San Francisco Police Department accountable for failing to protect Tempongko, despite her multiple attempts to seek protection. babae was able to join this council and participate in the planning and facilitation of a press conference in 2005, calling for the Filipino community and San Francisco County's accountability to Claire Joyce, as well as other Filipino women.
